The Heissa Holzmarkt Winter Festival is an alternative, community-run winter market held in Friedrichshain, in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, on the banks of the River Spree. Organised by the cooperative creative village Holzmarkt eG, it is known for its inclusive, eclectic character: a diverse program spans drag performances, DJ sets, live music, art installations and children's events, all with views across the river. Fire barrels and bowls dot the site for warming up, and a retro carousel from 1961 adds a nostalgic touch. Food stalls offer a wide range of options including pizza, burgers, raclette, crêpes, lángos, burritos, cheese spaetzle and ramen, plus homemade mulled wine and home-brewed beer, with meaty, vegetarian and vegan choices. Artisan stalls sell handmade soaps, honey, designer jewelry, pottery, ceramics and photographs. Families are well catered for with an indoor playground, bouncy castle, circus workshops, biscuit baking and storytelling. The market is reachable by Tram M5, M8 or M10 to Holzmarktstraße/Am Ostbahnhof, or a short walk from S Ostbahnhof or S+U Jannowitzbrücke.
